Veterans Benefits
The Gateway Chapter PVA National Service Office is available to assist members,
veterans, and dependents or survivors of a veteran with information regarding their VA benefits.
The Service Officers can provide information on available benefits, as well as assist in
filing for those benefits such as VA housing grants, adapted motor vehicle grants, and VA
disability claims and appeals. There have been recent changes to the Specially Adapted Housing
VA grant. The grant may now be used up to three times for a total of $50,000. This may be of
interest to veterans who previously used their housing grant, but did not receive the new
maximum amount. The National Service Officers can also help coordinate eligibility for receiving
care at VA hospitals and clinics. That care may be either as an inpatient or outpatient. In the
St. Louis area there is the VA John Cochran Hospital and also the Jefferson Barracks medical
facility that has a 32-bed spinal cord unit in Building 52. Newly injured patients may be
entitled to care at the spinal cord unit, as well as those injured longer but needing care for
problems such as pressure sores. Veterans may also be eligible for respite care stays at the spinal
cord unit to relieve the assistance demands on family members at home or temporary loss of
attendant care.
