All proceeds from our fundraisers goes directly to the veteran member programs of the Gateway Chapter. There is a total of twelve programs which include (1.) Oversight and advocacy of veterans’ care at the area VA medical centers (2.) Free transportation for area members, many of whom live in nursing homes (3.) Monthly and special holiday catered meals at the Spinal Cord Injury Unit at the Jefferson Barracks VA Medical Center. The VA has been “closed” to nonessential workers and outpatients for over three years. During this time we have paid for catered luncheons for staff and inpatients twice monthly, spending about $1600 per month (4.) Disability advocacy such as making the St. Louis Soldiers Memorial accessible and ensuring accessibility in the City Arch River redesign project (5.) Since 2014 a total of $1,013,865 has been awarded to veteran members in accessible vehicle grants and hand control grants (6.) Since 2014 a total of $343,271 was awarded to purchase home generators, which are crucial as power backups for medical equipment such as wheelchairs, beds, and oxygen tanks (7.) Since 2014 we have awarded $629,954 for members to make their homes more accessible, to include ramps, roll-in showers, and wider doorways (8.) Funding over a total of $500,000 since 2014 for seasonal adaptive sporting activities such as adaptive trapshooting, fishing, and snow skiing, Plus fund our member athletes attending the National Veterans Wheelchair Games
